Beware Of Realtor Scams - Real Estate Investing

The real estate market is hard to navigate. There are many things that should be considered prior to buying a piece of real estate from structural inspections to determining actual value. It can become overwhelming to the layperson. There are professionals, however, trained to help you buy a property that is what it’s advertised to be at an accurate price. Those professionals are called Realtors.

The best defense is education. First, not everyone who calls himself or herself a Realtor is an actual Realtor. A Realtor is a real estate professional who is a member of the National Association of Realtors or the NAR. Professionals eligible for member ship include brokers, salespeople, property managers, appraisers and others involved in the many aspects of real estate. Member of the NAR operate under a strict code of ethics and must serve their clients fairly.

But like in other areas where money can be made, there are scammers and crooks out there. Look for the designations. A real estate agent cannot claim to be a Realtor unless he or she is a member of the NAR. The association’s local chapter website allows you to look up Realtors or find one. Other designations mean that the Realtor has taken courses to further their expertise. So a Realtor with a commercial property expert designation should be the way to go when purchasing that type of real estate. Finally and perhaps the most simple is to shop around and get referrals from people you trust and read the fine print. If there is little information such as contact information on what you’re signing, don’t.

Working with a Realtor when buying or selling often means that you have an experienced professional on your side that is held accountable for their actions. Working with a Realtor doesn’t ensure you won’t get scammed; there are unethical people in all professions. It’s best to do your research and stick with reputable professionals.
